AHA! success. I moved my belt to the upper retainer on the mount plate and adjusted the x drive pulley to align better with the belt in it's new home. (It was rubbing on the motor side) Now the self test passes with no more troubles.

I very much wish I had read this before printing and installing the Bear ends. I am getting a full 250mm travel on the X-axis but the new firmware 3.12.2 has hung up on me because the self test fails. I gets as far as the X-axis check and fails right afterward. I think it sees too much movement from end to end. At the time I am writing this I have not yet solved the issue but I will get it done and try to get the solution posted here after.
